Initial Thoughts
by Elizabeth (Severson) Van Orden
My grandmother, 100, passed away in her sleep last night. Few people have the privilege of 46 years with a grandparent, let alone one as incredible as Grammy. Everyone who knew her loved her. And I really mean everyone, no hyperbole. People often say people loved someone because they were "so sweet" or "the nicest." Grammy was, of course, kind, but everyone loved her because she was brilliant, articulate, insightful, empathetic, and a truly gifted storyteller. She hated to cook, sew, craft, or do any of the things one associates with grandmothers.
She was driven by a deep-seated desire for independence and a career of her own; she was a trailblazing social worker and working mom. Decades ahead of her time. Her time was the most valuable thing she shared not only with family, friends, and those she served through her decades-long career, but also through her volunteer work, often working with nonprofits that helped underserved women gain scholarships to attend college.
